November Art News

Art News

What’s happening in the Mountain View Art Studio?

Kindergarten is learning all about the Elements of Art that artists use in their work.  So far Kindergarten students have become experts at understanding lines and how to use them in their work.  We are now going to study shapes, both geometric and free-form.  We are reading books and looking at artworks that focus on shapes.  We will be experiencing some printmaking, collage, and painting during the shape unit.

In 1st grade, students are working in clay.  We are making pottery (functional clay art) using the slab method.  This process builds on their knowledge of clay pottery from their experience in kindergarten making ‘pinch pots’.  Students will get choices on how they design their slab, whether it is a Autumn leaf design or something else of their choosing. We will finish up by glazing their finished pieces.

As November approaches, students in grades 2-5 are getting used to working independently and cooperatively on ideas of their own choosing.  We are using The Artist’s Process as a structure to focus their thinking and their work.  We will start to explore architecture as art while we open blocks/straws and connectors, study ancient and modern architecture, and open Trimble’s SketchUp program on the computer as an art medium for creating architectural plans.

Thank you to all of you who purchased from the Art to Remember                              catalogue.  Your products should arrive by the first week in December.  Thank you for supporting the art program at Mountain View.

What’s happening in the Mountain View Art Studio?

Throughout the year kindergarten will study the elements of art; line, shape, color, texture, form, as well as balance, pattern and rhythm. Each is studied through projects and experiences that expose them to many types of media and processes.
Kindergarteners are now working on learning about line. We practice making lines, we read about lines, and we study how other artists have used line.  Ask your children about the types of lines they see in their world.

In 1st grade, students are working in a color mixing paint project. Students become scientists and inventors as they develop new colors and names for those colors.  We will build a color wheel of our own to further our understanding of how color works.  Mood and feeling comes into play with as we study color and how it relates to music.  To celebrate fall, our next project will be the annual, popular making of leaf bowls from clay.

As October approaches, students in grades 2-5 are just now starting to see centers open in their studio.  We will start slowly with drawing, painting, and collage.   Students are exposed to a new concept, media, or technique everyday and choose how they incorporate that new information in their work. We are looking closely this year at the artist’s process.  In mid-October we will begin a unit that covers Mexican tradition and arts including Dias de Los Muertos (Day of the Dead) to coincide with students’ favorite holiday: Halloween!

September Art News

What’s happening in the Mountain View Art Studio?

We are off to a great start in the art!  The students are enthusiastic about making art and
many have come to class with ideas and goals for the year.  We have talked a lot about
where artists get ideas and how artists remain flexible in their thinking.  Each class has done
some art exercises to practice that flexibility in thinking.

For our first art rotation, we are all making art with the Art To Remember fundraiser in mind.
All  proceeds will be dedicated to purchasing display screens for the art department.

Kindergarten is printmaking using, sponges, gadgets, and hands.  We are using the book Swimmy
by Leo Lionni as inspiration.
1st Grade is drawing and painting peacocks. We are learning watercolor resist techniques,
how to blend colors, and how to observe to become better drawers.
2nd and 3rd grade is using shapes as a jumping off place for creating their own unique compositions.
We are incorporating overlapping and the application of textures and patterns to represent
abstract geometric drawings. The Spanish painter Joan Miro is our inspiration.
4th and 5th grade began by trying a variety of drawing techniques to get ready to make
their first artwork.  Gesture drawing, blind contour, abstract simplification, and enlarging to name
a few.  After studying the art of Georgia O’Keeffe, students were encouraged to choose
their own subject matter and create an artwork by drawing, painting, or collaging.
