Specials Night January 17th, 2013
Specials night was a great night to make art with students and their parents. We made Artist Trading Cards. Although, not much trading was going on, lots of creative cards were being made. Drawing, painting, collage, fibers, stamping, and basic sculptural supplies were available.

What’s happening in the Mountain View Art Studio?
Kindergarten is learning all about the Elements of Art that artists use in their work. Students will learn about form. We will work with materials like clay to make pottery, and 3-D paper collage techniques to make sculpture.
1st grade is continuing a collage project based on the art and books by Eric Carle. Exploration of media and communicating a point of view are at the heart of this unit. Students will work at creating stories for why their collage animal is 'mixed-up'.
In 2nd grade, students are creating clay masks. We discussed why people make and wear masks. After exploring African masks, we noticed that artists on many African cultures make masks that share some of the same characteristics. They are abstract, geometric, and exaggerated. Look for 2nd grade's interpretation of these same concepts in their masks.
Students in grades 3, 4, and 5 are working in the art studio and have choices like drawing, collage, painting, fibers, and printmaking and now clay. Basic hand-building techniques like slab, coil, and pinch as well as joining techniques (score, slip, and smooth) will be explored. Students will have choice in their final creation.
