What’s happening in the Mountain View Art Studio? We are off to a great start in the art!  The students are enthusiastic about making art and  many have come to class with ideas and goals for the year.  We have talked a lot about  where artists get ideas and how artists remain flexible in their thinking.  Each class has done  some art exercises to practice that flexibility in thinking. For our first art rotation, we are all making art with the Art To Remember fundraiser in mind.   All  proceeds will be dedicated to purchasing display screens for the art department. Kindergarten is printmaking using, sponges, gadgets, and hands.  We are using the book Swimmy  by Leo Lionni as inspiration. 1st Grade is drawing and painting peacocks. We are learning watercolor resist techniques,  how to blend colors, and how to observe to become better drawers. 2nd and 3rd grade is using shapes as a jumping off place for creating their own unique compositions.   We are incorporating overlapping and the application of textures and patterns to represent  abstract geometric drawings. The Spanish painter Joan Miro is our inspiration.  4th and 5th grade began by trying a variety of drawing techniques to get ready to make  their first artwork.  Gesture drawing, blind contour, abstract simplification, and enlarging to name  a few.  After studying the art of Georgia O’Keeffe, students were encouraged to choose  their own subject matter and create an artwork by drawing, painting, or collaging. What’s happening at the Mountain View Art Studio?

Kindergarten students are learning about balance this spring by studying masks from many cultures.  We will be looking at symmetrical balance and asymmetrical balance.  Making their own masks will give students a chance to understand how balance works in their own art.

Students in grades 1-5 are working in the studio with most of our centers open.  Architecture center has been a big hit as students learn to manipulate the straws and connectors in all new ways.  The new Colorado standards are being introduced to students now before they are fully implemented in the fall. Looking, Connecting, Making, and Thinking are the behaviors we are focusing on in the art room.  2^nd grade is working on a weather unit in art to connect to the work they have done in the classroom as well as the music room.  Fourth grade is making clay animals with modeling clay that they have invented as they learn about life zone adaptations.  We hope to use these to make claymation movies before the year is over.

To the 27 student artists whose work was displayed at the 31^st annual Broomfield Community Center Student Art Show.  The reception was March 9, 2012, and students who attended received ribbons and had an opportunity to see art that other students in Broomfield are making.

What’s happening at the Mountain View Art Studio?

Kindergarten students are continuing their work in texture by working in clay.  We are experimenting with the clay while experiencing all of its properties.  Clay pottery as well as paper and found objects will be introduced as a way to understand form and 3-dimensional sculpture.

Students in grades 1-5 have been working hard in the studio.  The students are being asked to push themselves as artists and to move beyond what they know they are capable of (stretch and explore).  New techniques are being demonstrated as well as new materials being added to each center.  Students are discovering that pattern can add visual interest to their paintings and drawings.  We are adding liquid watercolors to the painting station and trying to get new affects with resist techniques, adding salt, and masking parts of the painting.  We are will be opening copper tooling or metal embossing as another way to experience relief in the printmaking center.  Students will be very pleased when they see that making Daily Monsters will be available in the art studio again.

What’s happening at the Mountain View Art Studio?

It’s an exciting time for students in grades 1-5. We are opening the sculpture center and students are eager to get their hands on the materials.  I am stressing the idea of transformation with their sculptural work.  Viewers of the work should have a hard time guessing the materials that were used to make it (a lotion bottle shouldn’t still look like a lotion bottle!).  And the form should speak for itself.  There is a lot of active problem solving happening as students have to figure out how to make things stick, balance, and look transformed.  As you see these wonderful creations come home, remember that is this student-centered work.  Ask your students questions about their process, about their intention, and what their next steps might be.

Kindergarten students are continuing the learning of the elements of art.  We are exploring texture by pressing common objects into the clay.  We are learning that textures are all around our world and that artists use textures to give pattern and interest to their work.  Our texture study will extend to collage and printmaking in the spring.

Look for more 3-dimensional work coming home and on display as we start focusing on more types of sculpture.  Mask making, paper-maché and 3-D architecture will also be available.

What’s happening at the Mountain View Art Studio?

Students in grades 2-5 have been working hard in the studio.  The students are very interested in photography right now.  The art room has 3 digital cameras and students are taking photographs within the school. They are focusing on lines, shapes, textures, and shadows and learning that Point of View can change an ordinary picture into a work of art.  

More and more student work is now up in the kiva and the new wing hallway.  Students make their own decisions about which artworks get displayed and what they want us to know about the artwork through their artist statement. We will be examining the artistic process further this winter.  Determining when an art work is finished, self-evaluation/reflection and creating pre-plan can all help to push and stretch our abilities and our thinking further.

1^st grade and Kindergarten students have had a modified studio experience.  We’ve done some drawing, painting, collage, and clay sculpture as a whole class.  Students are transitioning to make their own choices during class while still learning the basic elements of art; line, color, shape, texture, form, space, and value.

December Art News

The Mountain View C.H.O.I.C.E Art Studio

Students are enjoying the variety of art-making activities available to them.  We are working in drawing, painting, collage, printmaking, and now fibers.  Students in grades 2-3 can do a stitching in burlap and yarn. 4^th and 5^th graders can try stitching or making coil baskets. They are experimenting with many different stitches including a running stitch, couching, backstitch, and satin stitch.  Weaving is also still a very popular activity in the fibers center. 

The art program has purchased 3 digital cameras to be used in the newly opened photography center.  Students are taking photos of the inside of the school with an emphasis on the lines, patterns, textures, and lights and shadows.  Students are beginning to learn what makes a good photograph including varieties in their ‘point of view’.

First grade is slowly learning how to use the art room as an art studio.  They have the opportunity to make drawings, paintings, and collages. We will soon begin a collage project with torn paper and printed gadgets.

Kindergarten is learning about and experimenting with color.  We explore paints as way to mix color and invent new colors.  We study how other artists like Henri Matisse, Alma Thomas, and Sonia Delaunay use color in their work.
