Kindergarten worked with clay to create actual and visual textures. They pressed objects including their shoe prints) into the clay to create a radially balanced design. After the clay dries, it will get fired and then the students will have a chance to paint it and add beautiful metallic rubs to show off those textures.

Paper Sculptures
2nd grade students made sculptures out of paper. They were limited to paper strips and only 1" depth. They didn't limit their imaginations though, because they made the most interesting sculptures; snowmen on snowmobiles, panda bears, funny faces, and abstract compositions. The students were building from previous lessons on contour line, cross-contour line. Each student evaluated their work while describing how they used line, how they created visual movement, and how their sculpture shows both positive and negative space.
Look for these sculptures hanging in the new wing hallway.
1st Grade with CHOICE
1st grade classes got a chance to experience a few CHOICE days between projects. They were offered drawing materials, collage, painting, stamping, and modeling clay.
Students brainstormed and we charted where artists get their ideas. I demonstrated making stencils in the painting center which focused on, not only the technique itself, but also color mixing we've learned earlier, but also symmetrical balance.
We also read the book, Beautiful Oops by Barney Saltzberg and students learned that even the worst mistakes and mishaps can be an opportunity to make beautiful things.
Daily Monsters
Students are really loving the flexibility and the unpredictability of Daily Monsters. Based on Stefan G. Bucher's website http://www.dailymonster.com/ , we tried our own versions in class with india ink, eye droppers, and cocktail straws.

What’s happening in the Mountain
View Art Studio?
Kindergarten is learning all about the Elements of Art that artists use in their
work. We are now studying Texture. Students are describing textures and
identifying them in artworks as well as in their world. We are creating texture collages,
texture rubbings, and textures in clay.
1st
grade is beginning a large-scale collage project
based on the art and books by Eric Carle. Exploration of media and
communicating a point of view are at the heart of this unit.
In 2nd
grade, students are working on a long unit based on the art of Alexander
Calder. We are making paper mobile
sculptures while focusing on line, movement, balance, and positive/negative
space.
Students in grades
3, 4, and 5 are working in the art studio and have choices like sculpture,
fibers, and printmaking. Printmaking will be explored with the focus on communication,
art processes, and making connections to their world. How does form follow function?

Kindergarten is
learning all about the Elements of Art that artists use in their work. We are now studying color. Students should be able to identify
primary colors and know how to mix the secondary colors. We are working with several types of
paint and will explore bubble prints.
In 2nd
grade, students are working on a long unit based on the art of Alexander
Calder. We are beginning to study
line and movement during some drawing exercises. Shape, space, both positive and negative, and balance, will
be explored through 3 dimensional art works made of paper, wire, and foam. This unit will culminate with the
students creating a balanced mobile.
Students in grades 3,
4, and 5 are working in the art studio and have choices like sculpture, fibers,
and printmaking. We are
examining how we know when our artwork is finished, what makes an exceptional
artwork, and how get better and more varied materials. We will start to explore architecture
as art while we open blocks/straws and connectors, study ancient and modern
architecture, and open Trimble’s SketchUp program on the computer as an art
medium for creating architectural plans. 1st Grade is just learning how to use
the art studio with limited choices.
We are exploring where artist get ideas.
